Parting Ways with OWC

April 22, 2023 by joecodes Leave a Comment

Sadly, after years as a customer, Other World Computing has decided they no longer want my business.

Other World Computing (OWC, MacSales) has been a long time partner. I have purchased many products from them over the years, recommended them to and purchased gifts for friends and family, and even promoted them here.

One of my recent purchases was another new battery for my trusty MacBook Pro. It degraded rapidly and before long it was clear the battery was not holding up. I arranged a warranty replacement with OWC, but when they received the battery they said I had sent them an old battery claiming it was the new one. I understood their confusion since I happened to have an old battery box which was perfect for mailing this item. My mistake, apparently, was that I did not black out the serial number from the old box. They refused to confirm or show proof that I had sent the wrong battery. After much back and forth, I requested they send my battery back since I was without a computer during this process. When I recieved it, I immediately opened the box, pulled my old battery out, and took a picture of the serial number directly on the battery. I confirmed again that this was indeed the correct battery. I called again and got someone who made an effort to help and we finished the exchange again.

OWC refused to apologize or acknowledge they had not only made a mistake, but accused me of defrauding them. I’m not sure why any company would behave this way let alone one I had purchased from over many years. I won’t buy from them anymore and will now recommend friends and family not shop there. All over a battery.

Quick Thoughts

  • I was surprised to learn that foreach in JavaScript does not have a traditional break. The loop will run to completion.

  • Who knew that combination sums across all permutation lengths of an array would be so difficult? It was a challenge but the final product looks good and takes a lot of resources. Limiting the max length for basic memory limits. Would only do something like this for occasional reporting.

  • Working on a new project that can have hundreds of forms on a page. The browser was spending way too much time in Parse HTML. Wasted a bunch of time before learning this is a long-standing bug in Chrome when there are many forms or inputs. Other browsers are fine.
